機械商社のサンホワイトトレーディング(大阪市中央区瓦町1の2の9、社長白崎博光氏、TEL06・229・3033)は経営多角化の一環として始めた南洋材のおがくずを原料とする木炭事業が起動に乗ったことから、国内向けに産地直送の独自の流通システムの確立、本格営業を開始した。インドネシアで製炭し、同社配送センターを経由して焼き鳥店などユーザーへ直接配送システムにより高級炭を割安料金で供給できるとしている。
同社は木工機械の輸出入を中心とする機械専門商社だが、世界的に木工機械の需要が先細り傾向にあることから、新規事業として六年前にインドネシアで製炭事業に着手。南洋材の産出国も環境保護の観点から原木での輸出禁止の動きが高まり、パルプや合板など木材加工し、当然ながら廃材やおがくずの処理は頭の痛いところ。そこでおがくずをプレス成形して現地で製炭し、ねんりょうとして輸出する事業を始めたもの。
八七年にインドネシア・セラム島に第一号の製炭所を建設、同国の木材集積地である主要河口の製材加工・合板工場の近隣に合計五ヶ所の製炭工場を開設した。年間一万二千トンの製炭能力を持ち、その大半を韓国の焼肉店や焼き鳥店など業務用に販売し、営業の二本柱となった。
おがくずをプレス成形したオガライトと呼ばれる燃料(一部を公衆浴場向けに販売)は直径五×長さ四十五ｃｍ、重さ一・二ｋｇあり、これを炭(おが炭)にすると直径四×長さ三十五ｃｍ、重さわずか四百ｇとなる。南洋材であってもサクラ、カシ材並みの炭の硬さになり、国産で最高級の備長炭並みの高級炭になる。
道産子には懐かしいオガ炭が、大阪で見事によみがえり、海外の焼き肉店など飲食業界から熱い視線を集めている。商社、問屋が軒を並べる大阪市中央区瓦町で炭会社を経営する白崎満千子さん(六十一)は『細うで繁盛記』を地でゆくような人だ。
夫の博光さんは一流商社を脱サラして輸出会社を設立。一九八六年、インドネシアに木炭の海外第一工場を稼動させた。ジャングルの製材作業から出てくる膨大なオガクズを見て、自然の資源をもっと大切に活用しなければ、とオガクズをプレスで六角形の棒状に固め、備(びん)長炭と同じ高温で焼いた木炭を製品化した。
「太陽炭」という名で地球にやさしいエコマーク商品として九二年、認定された。翌年、事業も軌道に乗り出しこれからという時、クリスマスイブに夫は五十八歳で急逝した。
平穏な生活を送っていた主婦が息子たちの反対も押しのけ、海外取引を主体とする事業家に変身した。
何から手を付けたらいいか途方に暮れていたら、友人から「炭に聞いてみたら」と言われ、葬儀の二日後に現地へ飛んだ。真っ赤に燃える炭を初めてみて「答えは決まった」。
だが、「あなたの一代記を書いてあげようか」という友人もいるほど新社長への荒波は厳しかった。何億もの借金、手のひらを返したような銀行の態度、商社間のし烈な競争、不明機材の追跡などきりがない。そんなヤマを一つずつ乗り越えてきた。
「安くて火持ちがいい」「火がはぜないので安全」との評判もこの二、三年のこと。直販方式(電話06・229・3033)で、引き継ぎ時より業績を三倍伸ばし、月産千トン体制にした。この不況でも韓国、台湾の焼き肉店はじめ、最近は東北、北海道チェーン店などから注文もきているという。
木炭の製造・販売を手がける大阪市の商社が、東南アジアで廃材やおがくずを炭に加工、日本国内で外食などの業務用のほか、農業用の土壌改良剤などとして本格的販売に乗り出した。木炭の需要はこの数年わずかながら増加しているが国内生産が伸び悩んでおり、今後、こうした炭製品の開発輸入が増えるものと予想される。
この商社はサンホワイト・トレーディング(本社＝大阪市)で、炭製品では国内販売業者としてトップクラス。同社はインドネシアで大量破棄されているおがくずに着目。圧縮、高熱処理を加え凝固させ、オガライトと呼ぶ1メートルのスティック状の炭を作った。
これをレストランなどの業務関係や家庭用サイズにカットして製品化する一方、粉末状に再加工し土壌改良材としても製品化。南洋材輸出国が、環境破壊につながるとして原木での輸出を禁止する動きを強め、合板や家具生産に力を入れているが、この際大量に出る廃材やおがくずを使う。
同社は十年前からインドネシアでこの製炭事業に着手し、製炭能力は年間七千二トン規模。これまで製品の大半を韓国に輸出していたが、今年から、本格的な日本国内向け生産が可能になった。価格は土壌改良剤で一キロ百～百五十円と国内価格半値以下。「廃材だが、国内産と火力、成分はおなじと白崎満千子社長は日本市場での積極販売に意欲を示す。」
なお、日本国内の炭の需要は、土壌改良材、また家庭内や外食関係でも利用価値が見直されている。
日本の木炭(粉炭を含む)需給は、平成三年時点で輸入が国内生産を上回るようになった。
以後、輸入の木炭は拡大を続け、平成三年に五四％あったシェア(占有率)は平成五年には、国内総消費量十六万六千トンのうち九万四千トンと五六％占めるまでになった。国内産の木炭も、グルメブームやアウトドア志向などを受け増産が続き、平成五年には七万三千トンになった。このうち、土壌改良用に七千五百トンがあてられている。
水道水の浄化や消臭、除菌など燃料以外の用途としても注目されている木炭。『サンホワイト太陽炭』は、木炭本来の燃料向けとして、業界で初めてエコマーク認定を受けた自社製品『太陽炭』の製造販売で、環境に優しい備長炭をＰＲしている。
太陽炭は、森林を伐採せずに、インドネシアで産業廃棄物として扱われるおが屑を有効利用して作る。
高温で燃えるなど、カシを原料にした天然の備長炭と同様の品質を持つ。そのうえ、価格が天然の約半分と安い。売上の、9割は、焼き肉店向けという。
白崎慶太社長（42）は、39歳だった01年4月、父親が創業した家業を引き継いだ。
上智大学理工学部を卒業後、大手科学メーカーのエンジニアとして、携帯電話向けのプリント基板などを作っていた。しかし、最終製品が完成するまでに、不良品が産廃として大量に捨てられるなど、環境問題に疑問を抱いた。
亡くなった父親に代わり、93年に社長になった母親は、炭の箱を抱えて一軒1件焼肉店を訪ね、新規取引先を開拓。苦労が実り、開発した焼肉店が全国チェーン展開したことも。
白崎社長は、『両親が育てた会社を存続させたかったし、太陽炭を通じて、興味がある環境分野で社会に貢献できる』と脱サラを決意した。
01年9月のＢＳＥ（牛海綿状脳症）発生に伴う焼肉店の売り上げ減少で、同年10、11月の同社の売り上げは前年同月比で7割も落ち込んだ。
だが、いけすの水質の浄化に太陽炭が使用されるなど、用途も広がり、現在では業績も回復。 昨年からは、家庭で一人で炭火焼きを楽しめる七輪などのセットや、炭が原料の洗剤、シャンプーなども通信販売で売り出している。
白崎社長は「炭には、奥深さを感じる。品質を落とさずに灰が出にくい炭を開発中」と話している。
「サラリーマン時代が鍛錬の場なら、今は青天井の下でのびのび仕事をしている気分。
自由でさわやかです」奈良市に本社を置く製炭会社「サンホワイト太陽炭」(本社・奈良市)の社長、白崎慶太さん(41)は２年前の４月、上場企業のエンジニアから転職して家業を継いだ。社長以下社員は５人。商社マンだった父親が脱サラして起こした会社だ。
名にもある「太陽炭」は、インドネシアで産廃として扱われるおが屑を圧縮して１０００度の高温で焼いたいわゆる「オガ炭」。エコマーク認定商品でもあるこの炭は、均一の堅さと遠赤外線効果を持ち、ウバメガシの備長炭と並び品質という。しかも価格が安く、炭火焼き肉店で需要を伸ばしている。
２人兄弟の長男坊。「学歴のなかった父は、息子の私に大学を出て大企業のサラリーマンになる夢を託しました」。上智大学理工学部を出て大手化学メーカーに勤め、携帯電話向け素材など最先端の技術開発のプラントを手がけた。
バブル全盛期、工場建設のため数億円単位の資金を動かしていたころは「自分が市長になって都市をつくるゲーム”シムシティ”を地でいく感じだった」と振り返る。家業を継いだのは93年に遭遇した父親の死。
「父はジャングルの奥地に炭工場をつくり、インドネシアとの間に太いパイプを築きました。
さあ次は販売という矢先に57歳で亡くなって。経営を引き継いだ母は、借金と炭の箱を抱えて１件ずつ焼き肉店を回り得意先を開拓したんです。そんな両親の生き様に背中を押されたんでしょうね」。
一方ではバブル崩壊後、一転して設備投資を止め、リストラを進める企業の中で「国内製造業に行き詰まりを感じた」ともいう。
エコロジーブームの追い風で木炭需要が拡大した。反対に狂牛病という逆風も。そんな中で「１ケースの炭を買ってくださるお客さんあっての商売。『売る』のでなくお客さんに喜んでもらえる。『商い』がしたい」と。
サラリーマン時代の「鍛錬」の成果が、じわじわと出始めている。
サンホワイト太陽炭（奈良市）が展開する炭と燃焼器具のネット通販サイト「炭天」で昨年11月から販売しているレトロな火鉢が人気を集めている。
岐阜県土岐市の陶器製造業者の倉庫に眠っていたもので、昭和30年代に職人技を駆使して作られた。手彫り、手描き、手塗りで仕上げられたこだわり商品で、ほとんどが一品物。
3～5万円代が中心で、趣のある色合い、伝統的な絵柄、どっしりとした風格が独特の存在感を醸し出している。夏場には中に水を張り、水草や花などを浮かべて、涼を演出するインテリアとしても使える。
本物志向の団塊の世代の引き合いが多いが、「小学生の子供の日本の伝統文化を教えたい」という理由で購入した40歳代の人もいたという。「店に風格が出る」として数台を注文したプロ需要もある。関連商品として五徳、火箸、灰ならし、火鉢の上げ底用に使用する焼き物粘土も販売している。
「火鉢には優しい暖かさや、気持ちを落ち着かせる雰囲気があり、エコ暖房の一つとしてもっと見直されてもいいのでは。本格的な火鉢を購入しようと思っても、小さな手あぶり火鉢以外は販売している店舗がほとんどないのが現状」と市川真由美専務は話す。
同社はエコマーク認定のオガ炭「太陽炭」のメーカー。木材加工の際に大量に発生するオガくずを圧縮加工し、、備長炭と同じ1200度以上の高温で焼成したもので、火持ちが良く、におわない、弾けないなどの特徴を持つ。
今後も炭天ではエコを追求した商品を拡充し、同社ならではのメッセージを発信していきたい、としている。

仕事がらアジア諸国を訪問する機会がありますが、ここ特にここ１～２年はその成長速度に目を見張るものがあります。バブル崩壊後、日本経済が停滞している間に、アジア諸国との経済格差は大きく縮小しているように感じています。
さて昨年の経営環境を振り返ってみますと、「原油高」による影響が具体化してきました。ガソリンが値上がりのみならず、アメリカ等のバイオ燃料ブームにより、コーン・大豆という最も基本的な食糧が供給不足による値上げ競争が家庭の食卓にまで及んできたということです。
過去に類を見ない、デフレ経済の恐ろしさを経験し、やっとその出口の兆しが見えてきたところ。待望のインフレ成長経済の到来ではありますが、その内容は違っているようです。
過去の好景気は、国内の需要増－値上－企業の収益向上－所得向上、失業率の低下と正のインフレスパイラルによりお金が回り、国民に豊かさを実感させるような好景気でした。その起点は、「国内消費の増大」です。
この原油高に始まった国内のインフレは、「国外消費の増大」を起点とし、国際価格が高騰、各企業はその原料高の一部を転嫁せねば立ち行かない状況になり、決して消費者の懐が温かい訳ではないのに、物価が上がり始めたという状況ではないでしょうか。
本年以降の戦略として、海外、特に購買力を付けたアジアマーケットへの販売を視野に取り組んでゆく必要がある、と考えております。
奈良市西登美ヶ丘の木炭製造販売会社専務の市川真由美さん(40)=写真=は、自社開発した工業用木炭を世界に広めようと、全国各地の金属業者などを奔走している。
「世代はバブル期に青春を過ごし、働くことの喜びを知らない人が多い。また、仕事を理由に子育てを放任するのもおかしい」と子育てと仕事も両立も果たしている。
社会に対しては「今の親は子どもの失敗を未然に防ごうとする。どんなことでも必ず経験させ、同じ目線でコミュニケーションをとるべきだ」と呼び掛け、夢は「ほしいものが手に入らない人を手助けすること」と語る。
木材輸出が盛んなインドネシアでは、製材加工時に大量のオガ屑が発生する。それを有効活用するため特殊な技術で圧縮加工し、1200度以上の高温でじっくりと焼き上げた木炭「太陽炭」を製造・販売している。業界初のエコマーク取得木炭として、大きな注目を集めている。
「化学物質などの不純分を一切含まず、無煙・無臭で耐久性に優れているため、調理用木炭に最適です。焼肉・焼き鳥店様などの業務用のほか、ネットショップ『炭天』でも一般販売しています。天然の備長炭と同等の火力・品質をもつ太陽炭をぜひご利用ください」
形状は六角形の筒状で重量感がある。燃焼時間がバーベキュー炭の約４倍と長いほか、カットしやすい、はぜない、燃え残りがないなど多くの利点を備える。製造コストを抑えているため、価格も天然備長炭の半分以下だ。
木炭を燃焼して発生する二酸化炭素は、原料である樹木の時点でそれを吸収するため、排出温暖化ガスとしてカウントされない。温暖化ガスの－６％達成が呼びかけられている現在、同社では石油、石炭、天然ガスに代わる燃料として木炭の普及に努めていく。

今年は年男にあたりますが、新年早々、できるなら触れたくないサブプライム問題があります。サブなどという状況でなく、世界中に金融不安をもたらし、消費不況を引き起こすなど、大変な状況に陥っています。
当社の木炭工場も影響を受けています。サブプライムによって欧米諸国の住宅需要が激減し、製材木材の輸出が不振となり、廃棄原料であるオガ屑の入手が非常に入手困難な状態に陥っております。
影響は一時的かも知れませんが、大量消費を前提としたリサイクルビジネスでも、世界的な消費の低迷で、流れが滞ってきているように感じています。
加えて急激な円高、日本の製造業は新たな試練に直面しています。デフレ経済が長く続いた日本にはリストラに立ち向かう余地はありせん。
世界規模で変化する中、言いつくされた言葉ですが、「ピンチはチャンス！」に切り替える、当社は高い志を掲げています。新しい分野へ積極的に挑戦をしていきます。この1年は生き残りをかけた正念場と、気を引き締めます。

一昨年からのサブプライム問題を発端とし、日本経済は行きつく先の見えない状況にあります。不景気な話題には事欠かない時代を嘆き、すでに飽きた感がある昨今となりました。
「昨年は生き残りを掛けた正念場になる１年」と奮闘させていただきました。結果、なんとか生き残れました。総括してみると、これから商売のキーワードが見えてきた気がします。
その感触は、「！」（びっくりマーク）では無いでしょうか。大手携帯電話会社では、「Y!」や「S!」というネーミングでサービスが既に提供されており、その意味がようやく理解できました。今や商品やサービスの機能・品質等の競争も行き着き、各社とも大差がなくなってきています。
そんな競争の中で、消費者の選択枝とは、お客様の想像を超えた提案・サービスを提供する事ではないでしょうか。
大手ゲーム機メーカーでは、壊れたゲーム端末が送られてくると、その端末に貼られたシールを全て剥がし、新品の端末に貼りなおして返送していると聞いています。
経営の最適化や効率化が進み、サービスも有料化・画一化されてきています。
